I’M ABDULLAH AL OTHMAN a Saudi artist and a contemporary writer.I was born at Riyadh, and this birth was an amazing artistic continuous movement that began at 1985 till the moment that I was kneaded with more madness and art. I do not believe that the purpose of art is only to deal with an issue or to apply a certain wisdom. I want to be saved through art with the least loss. If life is my predicament then art is my salvation. I go to a marginal area, and treat it as a center to make things, to play and to practice art in the street, by looking deeply into people’s faces and by my daily greetings and during sleep. I look for questions that lead me not to answers but to other questions. My art work starts with a question concerning life , its cycles and its effect on my and their existence “Art is life” Art means living better .

JUMPING OFF A PEPSI CAN

I will jump off a Pepsi can. I may call it an attempt to measure the distance between me & my biography; the mere desire to watch a short silent film. That is a very long distance for someone like me besieged by slowness & remembrance! The distance just before the fall will suffice; to examine my obsessions’ and fate in this world at this very moment.

THE BLACK BOX

The Black Box, inspired by The Question, visually graphs the human voice with the inclusion of sound. The artist graphs an actual portions of the interviews but, unlike the original silent video installation, he allows us to listen to an anonymous participants speaking. Although we are able to understand some words, we mostly hear electronic static that shrouds the full meaning of what is being said. As we strain to listen in order to capture some of what was recorded, we are aware of the tension in the voice as one person grapples with a way to articulate innermost thoughts about Allah. We hear a part of the recording, but we cannot fully understand. Thus, the privacy of the conversation and the trust between the artist and interviewees is secure, allowing the mystery of what was privately shared to remain intact. The title of the piece refers to the “Black Box,” the recorder on an airplane, which records all conversations between the pilot and co-pilot during flight. The “Black Box” of the airplane and Al-Othman’s piece act as vessels, objects that hold knowledge and contain the private worlds or “sacred places” intimately shared between two human beings. The orange refers to the actual color of the “Black Box” recorder located in the cockpit of a plane. While the transparent blue light represents the clarity of the artist-poet’s voice, the opaque orange, where no light can shine through, is a reference to the concealed and private conversations of the Black Box.

VOICE WAVES SERIES

Voice Wave Series, Al- Othman , the artist-poet , tackles questions regarding conceptual ideas that underpin many of his pieces. In this case how to use the cold hard surface of metal with color plexi-glass to convey and capture an aspect of the human voice . These small , wall – mounted installation pieces symbolically represent the sound of Al-Othman’s voice as he recites verses from his poems. The artist records himself reciting, then transfers the recording digitally to graph the sound waves onto laser-cut metal, creating a “ drawing” of his voice. Like the sound of the human voice , color and light project into space . The blue color contained within Al – Othman’s pieces represents the sound of the poet’s recitation. The corresponding blue light projects on the wall behind and radiates into the room through the beauty of light projecting through colored glass. The transparent blue light represents the clarity of the artist- poet’s voice we long to hear. In the Voice Waves Series, Al-Othman, the published poet, merges his poetry with his work as a visual artist. In addition to their visual impact–cold , industrial grade steel with brutally sharp teeth-like forms softened by watery blue reflections upon a white wall – the beauty of these pieces is that the two halves of the artist’s creative life are brought together as one.

THE SEARCH FOR AN AUTOMOBILE INVOLVED IN THE FAILURE OF A GIRL’S HEART . A SCENE FROM A PERFORMANCE IN RIYADH STREETS .

A performance art in the streets of Riyadh; searching for a car that caused failure of a girl’s heart and affected the natural pace of life. The car that i am searching for symbolises a narrow social concept that is closed to itself and sometimes it refers to a direction or a syndrome that was created accidently ,and was developed to become a hurdle in our way towards the openness that we aim for. This prevented us from reaching the point we strive for, which as a result disrupted the rhythm of life and I am here to search and defend myself directly.

THE TIN FARM

I gathered a total of 22 Sidder Trees, of different shapes and sizes. Together with a myriad of dead species found within our cities and deserts. Upon collecting said materialIdesigned the artwork “ I n s t a l l i n gin the Void “ and “ E t e r n a l i z i n g of Tree through Cardiac catheterization”.

SUSPENDED

In Suspended ,ِ Abdullah AlOthman created an intervention in Al- Khunji Al- Kabir in the old city of Jeddah in order to instill a renewed notion of its remarkable architectural style.He has covered the entire building with tin foil in a symbolic gesture to its frozen state.Buildings and cities,like people, have their own histories and go through their own journeys. By wrapping up the entire building , the artist sought to make a statement about the absurdity of thinking that the cycle of change could ever be stopped . As the old saying goes , change is the only constant thing in life.As the sun will shine on the Khunji and its rays will be reflected from the tin foil in all directions,it will inspire new emotions and ideas in people

THE QUESTION

IN A PERIOD OF THREE MONTHS, WE ASKED 28 PEOPLE ABOUT GOD .

THE QUESTION

I recorded the visual reactions of the answer during dialogue. I focused on each case, recording the tiny and ambiguous details and reading them again to detect emotions of worry, doubt, fear and indifference. The visual reaction is more truthful. I counted on that reaction more than I counted on the spoken language itself. Language sometimes may consist of a simple collection of diction.The motive behind this research and dialogue that took 90 days with 28 persons such as artists, writers, thinkers, actors, students and laborers was the search for belief in Allah. Would their chances and lives change when their faith has greatly changed? This research project led me to many questions, but not to a definite answer

SOUND CARVING

Throughout the years that have passed us in this universe and specifically in the desert, sound is the main factor in the formation of mountains in nature, even if we look at the desert and took a look at the form, we will find an amazing desert formed through sound.

We are the extension of this voice and this desert. Not because I am the son of the desert, but because it is both tolerant and homogeneous human nature at the same time. The nature of geography and the spiritual nature that has suffered from everlasting marginalization, enslavement and denial, although today’s world is derived from the energy coming from the desert and from the resources provided by the desert, in a country like Saudi Arabia, the desert has become a source of solar energy .

LIGHT GRATING

With ‘basher’ meaning grater in Arabic and ‘bashar’ as a homonym meaning people, I wanted to create something that would capture and reflect the thousands of various families, people homes and kitchen tables that these graters touched. I’m sure a lot of moms out there were wondering where their cheese graters went. Hopefully now those moms can see the story of their families celebrated in a fun and interesting way.
